Nearest postcode is NP22 4HG Grid Ref: SO119131
Terrain Merthyr Common provides technical orienteering and is located in the Blaenau Gwent region, to the north east of Merthyr Tydfil and north of Tredegar. It consists of open limestone uplands lying between 420 m and 620 m above sea level. There are numerous pits, depressions and sink holes as well as limestone pavements and other rock features. Runnability is generally good.
With a profusion of pits and depressions on the area, many small ones of diameters of 3-4 meters are not mapped.
There are the remnants of some industrial activity on the area including the remains of an elevated aerial pulley system that crossed the area.  The cut off bases of the supporting pylons remain in places and are marked on the map with a black cross.
Many of the rocky pits on the area are steep and very deep in places.  Approach these with caution. Do not leap in.  These are marked with black V on the map or with crag symbol.
Many of the paths on the area are vague in parts and where used on the less technical courses taped canes may be used to assist in the vaguest parts.  Some Smilies and Sad faces may be used to designate correct or wrong route from a control on non-technical courses.   In particular a taped route is used early on the Yellow and Orange courses to steer competitors though a rocky area.  Use care traversing this route.  Near the end off to one side there is a precipitous drop which is taped off with black and yellow hazard tape – Do not cross or go near the tape.
There are also some animal trackways on the ground that are not mapped. This area has previously been used for several major events, e.g. Croeso 2008, Harvester 2009 and JK2014
Crags near to the Start will be marked with YELLOW & BLACK TAPE. Do not cross the tape!

Trophy return At Assembly between 10.00 and 12.30pm on Sunday
Dogs There is a herd of Black bullocks on the area.  These tend to be in the road area near the Aneurin Bevin monument in the early morning.   They then tend to gravitate more onto the Llangynidr area to the NE. There are also wild ponies /horses on the area. These stay on Merthyr Common and competitors may encounter near end of courses..  Sheep also freely graze the area.   Dogs are permitted in the car parking area and Assembly but must be on leads. Our continued use of the area is dependent on our good relations with the graziers.
Prize-giving We aim to commence at approx. 14.00. Welsh League 2019: winners will be presented with their prizes at prize-giving.
