Race Format

MapRuns are open to all. You can compete alone or as a team, the distance you cover is up to you.

  • You’ll need to track down checkpoints in any order to complete the one hour urban challenge.
  • The checkpoints will be marked on a map, provided during the race briefing.
  • There is no fixed course or path to follow. It’s up to you to find the fastest way to the checkpoints through the city.
  • The distance is up to you. It depends on the number of checkpoints and how well you can navigate the streets- expect to cover 10-12km if you visit all the checkpoints.
  • You’ll need to download the maprun app so we can see which checkpoint’s you’ve been to.
  • You’ll start and finish in the same place.
  • The checkpoints will be assigned different points values. The person who returns with the highest score is the winner. Be warned if you go over the hour time limit penalties apply!

Accessible Orienteering – SWOC recognise that some participants with reduced mobility or who use a wheelchair may benefit from a bespoke map with potential hazards highlighted. Please email the organiser in advance to let them know that you are coming and any specific needs.

You can leave your personal belongings safely at the meeting point.

Afterwards join us for food /drink to debrief and discuss routes.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll have a lot of fun, while battling with the other runners for the honours of topping the leaderboard. Plus let’s be honest, everyone needs some motivation to get outside and explore new routes in the dark winter evenings.

We expect you to respect the general traffic rules and be extremely aware of your surroundings. You are strongly recommended to wear bright hi-vis clothing and a torch to see where you are going.

Under16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
