Day 1 Welsh Middle Distance Championships

Saturday 29th February 2020, Merthyr Common

General Information As an informal competition there are no prizes for the Welsh Middle Distance Champions, but winners will be able to see who they are from the results. The event is open to all, but to be eligible for the titles, you must be a current member of WOA as at midnight on Sunday 23rd February 2020 and comply with at least one of the following criteria: •             Birth – either self or one parent born in Wales •             Residence – at least one year’s current permanent residence in Wales.  

Entry to the championships is by age class and only that age class will be considered when determining championship results. 

Cwpan Y Ddraig: The event includes the inter-club competition for juniors in Welsh clubs. The club that wins Cwpan Y Ddraig goes forward to the final of the National competition for juniors, the Yvette Baker Trophy.

This is also a Welsh League 2020 event

Parking A mixture of on-street and off-street parking near Pantysgallog primary school
Assembly in Car Park on Heol y Bryniau, near Pantysgallog Primary School. Enquiries, Entry on the day and  first aid at Assembly. (Location of toilets to be confirmed)  
Safety   The moor is very exposed and in strong wind gets cold quicklyWaterproofs may be compulsory even if not rainingIf the weather is bad (snow or gales) the event made need to be postponed, so please check the SWOC website  
Start times Starts from 12.30 hrs until 14.00 hrs. Courses close at 15:30 hrs.
Starts About 1km walk to the start up a gated road and then track. Some shelter (a club tent) will be available adjacent to the Start.
Finish The finish is close to the start. Clothing can be left nearby Start/Finish. Download will be by the Finish.

Maps All courses 1:7,500 except brown 1:10,000, 5m contours, on waterproof paper. Control descriptions printed on map, plus separate control descriptions will be available in the start lanes.  The map was updated and converted to ISOM 2017 in 2019.

Dogs With respect to the graziers, we regret dogs are not permitted on the terrain because of sheep grazing freely.

Day 2: Welsh Championships, Long Distance Race

Sunday 1st March 2020, Merthyr Common

Information about the event This event is the Welsh Long Distance championships. The event is open to all, but to be eligible for trophies and mementoes you must be a current member of WOA as at midnight on Sunday 23rd February 2020 and comply with at least one of the following criteria: •             Birth – either self or one parent born in Wales •             Residence – at least one year’s current permanent residence in Wales.   Entry to the championships is by age class and only that age class will be considered when determining championship results.   

This is also a Welsh League 2020 event.  
Travel From the A465 take the Trefil turn-off east of Merthyr (also signed Tredegar A4048).  Follow north through Nantybwch to Trefil Nearest postcode is NP22 4ET, (Tafarn Tý Uchaf public house) Grid Ref: SO118131

Assembly Adjacent to Parking Enquiries, first aid, trophy return, download, toilets are all located at Assembly.  Welsh Junior cake stall will be in the assembly area.
Safety   The moor is very exposed and if the wind blows gets very cold, very quickly.  Waterproofs may be compulsory even if not raining. Dogs The area has sheep freely grazing. Dogs are permitted in the car parking area and Assembly but must be on leads. Our continued use of the area is dependent on our good relations with the graziers.
Prize-giving We aim to commence at approx. 14.00.
Welsh League 2019: winners will be presented with their prizes at prize-giving.
