Happy New Year!
It seems a long time since I was out with a map and compass but there are plenty of events coming up in the next few months. Once again organisers are needed if all the planned Club events are going to go ahead so please help out wherever possible.

AGM News

The venue for the AGM was rather unusual this year-a draughty corner of the car park at Clee Hill, but at least a good number of members were present.
The election of officers was as follows:

Committee Members, Kevin Bush, Judith Powell, Richard Jones Nick Dallimore, Jane Richie.
Thanks to everyone who is stepping down from the Committee especially Rebecca Moir (Treasurer).

Club Trophies were awarded to :
Wanted Club Press Officer
Person to liase with the BOF office to increase public awareness of orienteering locally. Contact Pete Colbert if you are interested

Compass Sport Trophy

Congratulations to everyone who made the journey to Titterstone Clee and to John Mills for organising the entries. It was a superb effort to win the Trophy for the third year running. Keep March 16th free in your diaries for the 1st round of this years event.

Club Captain's Notes

CompassSport Cup 2003

Although its only 2 months since the 2002 final, the 2003 event starts shortly. SWOC have been drawn in the West Midlands heat against COBOC, SPLOT, and SMOC. The heat takes place on 16th March 03 at Ragley Hall near Alcester. Should we win the heat, the final is on 1st June, probably near Kings Lynn. Please keep these dates free if possible. The two junior courses now have 2 counters each instead of one, so getting the juniors to these events will be very important. I will be contacting club members shortly to check availability, but please let me know asap by email whether you will be available.

JK and British Relays

JK relays are at Bloom and Horton Woods near High Wycombe on Monday 21st April and the British Relays are at Greno Woods, Sheffield on Sunday 18th May. I havn't got any details of courses for either relays yet, but please let me know as soon as possible if you want to run for SWOC. I expect most of the teams will run the short open or women's short courses, but we may be able to enter some junior and senior age class teams as well.

New Year Score Event

Despite torrential rain there were people mad enough to turn up for Nyall's Score event. Tesco shoppers had never seen anything like it, unable to return their trolleys because of the mass of bodies sheltering. Everyone enjoyed running off some of the Christmas excesses and they couldn't have been the only ones out in the park as two controls disappeared!

Wenallt Colour Coded

For a change the awful weather forecast didn't materialise and apart from almost running out of maps and SI cards ( we were only expecting 80 max but got nearly 100) most things ran smoothly. Clem did a good job planning and taping controls but couldn't be there on the day. John Mills was left with the unenviable task of placing and checking the controls in the rain. The use of SI units certainly makes this job more difficult but fortunately none of them disappeared. It was interesting to meet several non members from the area who access the web site and enjoy supporting local events.

Night Score Event-Llangynidyr in the dark (and wind and rain)

I don't know how Jill was talked into organising this event, I don't think she will be rushing to do another one. I remember thinking that a gentle jog placing a few controls in the afternoon would be quite pleasant, it was. However as darkness fell the horizontal rain started and the clouds came down. 33 hardy (and mad) competitors turned up and the majority said they had enjoyed it, even though some of them only managed to find one control.
Sat in the car waiting at the finish we were counting down the competitors, anxious to get to the pub. It was reassuring as lights flickered into view and people who were 30 minutes late appeared. Some people were enjoying it so much they stayed out over the hour! Unfortunately one person was 45 minutes overdue when the last man to start was in. Concern was mounting in the car but Jill was still out so we were hoping that she might have seen him.
When he was an hour late the decision was made to alert Mountain Rescue, given that the he wasn't overdressed for the conditions and that it might take some time for the Unit to arrive. As it happened it took half an hour to get through to the correct person. In the mean time Nick had set out with the emergency sack to check the ravine where someone thought they may have seen a light. Much to everyone's relief the missing person finally appeared having wandered a long way off the area to Trefil Village where he had had to knock on a door to find someone to give him a lift back to the start . Although he was cold and shaken he seemed non the worse for his experience. Mountain rescue was cancelled (fortunately before they had actually done anything) athough Jill did have to explain the attractions of Night O to the 2 policemen who turned up.
