WANTED
URGENTLY

16 of the club have just returned from the lakes 5 day event & for once the weather was good. The last of the club Score events has been held and the general feeling amongst the people who turned up was positive. Although the organisers had a hard time putting out controls etc their efforts were appreciated -Thank you. Is this going to become a permanent feature in the calendar? Once again the Club is looking for volunteers to become more active in its organization. As we have so few members it is important that the load is shared and that same people don’t get left doing everything . Club website www.swoc.cwc.net, Club Webmaster - nigel.ferrand@uk.pwcglobal.com
Club Treasurer
- to take over from Rebecca,( she is willing to produce this years end of year accounts).
There are still some CLUB T SHIRTS available at very greatly reduced prices, Contact Pete Colbert for the latest info on prices, sizes etc. Equipment Officer
- You don’t have to do much, just have some spare space for the club gear (a shed or 1/4 of a garage is enough).

Congratulations to Pete Ribbans on his engagement.

Unfortunately this means that he is moving. So the club equipment has to be moved very soon. A new EQUIPMENT OFFICER is needed urgently.

MARATHON SUCCESS

"I would just like to say a huge thank you to everybody who sponsored me to run the London Marathon. I raised £1250 for the National Asthma Campaign and am very grateful for the support that my fellow SWOC members gave me. The weather on the day was perfect and I managed to get around in just under 4 & ½ hours which was a bit longer than I hoped for but at the end was just pleased to finish. The running on the day wasn’t half as bad as I expected and I can definitely say that the training was harder than the day itself as I am not the most dedicated of runners! The miles between 21 and 25 were the hardest, but overtaking Frank Bruno after 23 miles gave my friend and I the kick that we needed to finish. It was a wonderful experience and after finishing I said I would do it again next year. Now that a few months have passed though, the thought of those long 3 hour runs in the rain is not appealing at all!
Thanks again, Carys Morgan"

Compass Sport Trophy

Lakes 5 day Event

The re-arranged Compass Sport Cup final will take place on 10th Nov at the HOC Badge event at Titterstone near Ludlow. The area is fast runnable moorland with some detailed worklings. Please keep this date free and contact John Mills if you are available to run. We have just arrived back from the Lakes having had an enjoyable week. The weather was too hot for the first 3 days (Nick spent the week running in shorts) and only one day was typical rain and low cloud. There were three days with very steep climbs to the start which were energy sapping but the areas then used more than compensated for the climb. Unfortunately there was car parking chaos on day 1 which resulted in the Police closing the parking field and turning some people away. Because of this only 3 events counted in the final results which made things very competitive. Alan MacKenzie definitely found the best accommodation with cooked breakfast a landlady who washed 4 sets of O kit each night!! Congratulations to Rhodri Buffet who won each day of his event to take the overall M14 A prize.

MBTO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002

Fifteen of us travelled out to Fontainbleau as the British Team for the MBTO World Championships. The events were held over 5 days with a range of sprint (30min ) and Classic (1.5 hrs) courses. Most orienteering countries had sent teams including Japan, USA & Australia. The first day was going to be the prologue for the main event which was to be a chasing start. Unfortunately for the French organizers there was mutiny amongst the non French competitors because the map had been used for the French selection event a few weeks earlier! After a protest the first event was only used to decide the start order for the next day’s long race rather than actually counting. This was a shame as it was the only one I had a decent run in.
The event area was mixed woodland with a complex path system. The notable feature of the area were the ’star’ junctions with up to 12 paths meeting at the same point. This required some pretty accurate counting as you went into the junctions. This was complicated further by the fact that many of the smaller paths were out of bounds and marked with a small red cross which was very easy to miss on the poor quality laser printed maps we had to use. None of the out of bounds paths were marshalled and most of us saw people taking short cuts. The tracks we were allowed to use were often very sandy and almost unrideable.
The best british results were from John Houlihan who was 11th in the classic distance and 9th in the short race. I had very disappointing runs making mistakes in both races. A 2 minute route choice error in the short race was enough to drop me by 30 places.

SWOC Score Relay Merthyr Common North

This was run on a blazing hot day in July (yes there was one) and attracted a select but high quality field from SWOC & SBOC. Nyall had planned a challenging course on the very difficult terrain available which resulted in a win for a scratch team of Judith Powell, John Mills & Clare Dallimore, closely followed by the rest of the Dallimore family. Clare claims to have won this event for the last 3 years so if anyone wants her in their team next year they will have to book early!

Club Midweek Score Events

The overall results of the Score League are enclosed. Those who did turn up seemed to enjoy themselves over a great variety of terrain on well planned courses. The weather was kind for the 2 high level events which were also the best attended attracting a few runners from SBOC.
Congratulations to Nick Dallimore for winning. He may claim a free club T-shirt of his choice from the remaining stock. Second and third places went to John Mills and Caroline Dallimore.
My family and I have had several debates about problems with the scoring system which closely follows that used in the Western Night League. For example:
1 The handicap factors are based on BOF course length ratios but seem to penalise the 18-21 year olds too much. They also assume that every competitor is at the same fitness and ability relative to their age class. It might be fairer to use a handicap system based on individuals known performance.
2 The penalties for being late are also increased by the handicap factor. Hence a W10 finishing 1 minute late gets penalised 34 points compared to an M21's 10 points. The counter-argument is that a 10 point control is actually worth 34 points to a W10, so the penalty is actually 1 control for both.
3 Organiser's lose an opportunity to increase their score. The league was designed to only count the best 4 events, so that competitors could miss 1 event and still win. However, after the first event I felt that organisers were still being disadvantaged, so should be given an average score, but how was it to be calculated? Average of their scores for each event?; Average score for the particular event?; Estimated score based on average position at other events?
It was plainly unfair to change the rules after the league had started, so I have compromised and given a flat 700 points (the score for an average person) to each organiser. Without this addition, John would have won, but I think he will agree that Nick is a deserving winner. A special thank you to all the organisers, but especially Nigel Ferrand who stepped in to replace Peter Ribbans a couple of days before the final event.
