Preparations for the National event are continuing, Helpers were being enlisted at the Club Dinner but more are needed, see below. Nigel Ferrand has taken over as the new Club Webmaster he can be contacted nigel.ferrand@uk.pwcglobal.com It was decided to organise a series of evening events | during the summer These will be 1hr Score events held fortnightly on Thursdays see calendar. To celebrate National Orienteering Week (8-16th June) the Club is organising a Gallopen at Mynydd y Gaer. The next meeting is on Tues 5th March. | A big thank you to Gill Manning for arranging the
Club Dinner in January it was no mean feat sorting out menus etc. Several
members turned up for the afternoons activities which included a cycle
reccee of the GlanUsk Park to plan the parking for our event, various
walks and for the more active a run to the Chartists cave, followed by tea
at Gill’s house. As you can see the calendar is full in the coming months
however behind all these events are an army of helpers. Please offer
assistance when you can or enlist the help of non-orienteering family
members it can be fun!!! On a more serious note SBOC is reporting a 60%
drop in their membership renewals which as a small club may be a worrying
trend. Top |
Thanks to all contributors. Next copy date April 21st. Caroline Dallimore, caroline@ndallimore.freeserve.co.uk |

NGOC Night O Bixslade | |
---|---|
February 10th a child free weekend, it was going
to be a tough decision to decide how to spend Saturday night. Would it be
a romantic Candlelit meal or a trip to the theatre or Cinema or a Night
Event at Bixlade? There was no contest as far as Nick was concerned and I
reluctantly agreed I will try anything once. As darkness fell I was definitely having second thoughts. Having a reputation for getting lost on a regular basis how was I going to cope in the dark? Nick was reassuring telling me that there was always an easy yellow course. The rain had stopped by the time we started and I had decided to do the 6 controls on the yellow course. It was very different in the dark, paths were not obvious but I managed to find the first 3 controls with their luminous tapes fairly easily. Feeling much more confident I decided to divert to 3 other controls which were a short way off the path, I was alright until I had to retrace my steps to get back onto the yellow route. I thought that I was on the right path but when 4 wasn’t where I expected mild panic set in . I retraced my steps. | Where were all the friendly lights which had been bobbing
through the trees earlier ? Was my torch really becoming fainter? With
time ticking by I decided to head West on a large track hopefully towards
the Car park. I had taken the precaution of leaving my mobile phone no on
the back of my control stub much to the amusement of the organiser but
what would I be able to tell anyone who phoned ? I am in a wood on a track
and my torch has almost given up! Just then 2 lights flickered into view
Where was I? Somehow I had managed to get myself to the 4th control which
was right next to me. From there it was plain sailing although the small tracks through the trees were hard to follow. It was a great relief to reach the finish only 12 minutes late! Would I be tempted to try another one?? Possibly, but it would be more fun in a pair (most people were in pairs) and I would make sure that it wasn’t me left with the Action Man torch again.
