Helpers wanted for Cwm Lickey League Event 7th March
Recent SuccessesEDITORIAL
Congratulations to Cerys Manning (W18) on her win at the opening race of the Future Champions series. She flew around the course in a time of 24-18.
Cerys was also successful at the first national event of 2004 coming 1st out of 18 with a lead of over 2 minutes.
This was also one of the Selection races for the Start Programme. Unfortunately Rhodri Buffet (M16) missed first place by 23 seconds after a minor error early on in the race. He had also had a good run at the FCC even though he was running up a class (M18) coming 7th out of 41.
Lauren Ferrand (W14) was 16th at the GO National Event.

Well Done Everyone
The 2004 season has got off to a flying start for some of the younger members of the Club. In this issue you will find exciting plans for an exchange visit and the usual requests for help at events.
If everyone could offer to help at just one club event it would make the organisers job so much easier. You don't need experience and it's a good way to meet other members. Provisional dates for SWOC events are listed in the calendar. Unfortunately it looks like the mid-week Summer Score Series won't be happening this year. Any suggestions for a substitute???
Several people are being trained to use the SI equipment. If there is anyone else out there who is interested please contact Graham Tough.

TRIPLE O SEVERN WEEKEND -Helpers needed
There has been some confusion in the organisation of these events with BOK under the impression that SWOC was helping with Day 1 and NGOC ( & SWOC committe) thinking we were only helping with Day 2. This has resulted in Day 1 being short of helpers. However - SWOC will be running the starts at the NGOC National Event on Sunday 2nd May at Lydney Park (Day 2 of Triple O Severn Weekend).
Please could you let Pete Colbert [pete.colbert@btopenworld.com - (029) 2076 3827] know whether you will be able to help, and whether you would prefer an early or late run. Please enter the event as normal, discounted entry fees will be sorted out later.
The Welsh Junior Squad have been asked to help on Day 1 at Russell's Enclosure. If anyone else is available on that day please contact Mark Saunders on ?????
STOP PRESS Croeso
British Championship Relays have been moved to the Forest of Dean. This event will be organised by BOK as part of the 0007 weekend because of the loss of the access in the North. As you are all aware we are organising Day 6 on 21st August . Please could all helpers contact Nigel Ferrand who is our organiser. (Tel 02920255037 or nigel.ferrand@virgin.net) All helpers will get a free run on that day , when entering write helper Day 6 on the form and do not pay for that day.

Dear SWOC Member,
I want to start (metaphorically) in April 2004.
I am a member of the Welsh-Norwegian Society, and last winter gave them a talk on Orienteering in Norway and Wales .Since then I have been asked to arrange an event for them. Hence on Sunday April 25 this year, between 1030 and 1330 there will be a Closed Event for the 30 - 40 I expect to turn up, at Cosmeston Country Park making use of the Permanent Courses.
My ulterior motive in telling you this is to ask for members to come along to give instruction..if you can turn up, please give me a ring on 02920 515829 a few days beforehand.

Next: I should be spending around 20 days this year updating the survey of Draethen. Anyone wishing to learn a bit about map surveying is welcome to join me for a day or two. Call me or drop me an e-post, on
mikedown@mikedown.plus.com

"Finally" but certainly not least:
in 2005 Hordaland County (capital = Bergen) is celebrating 100 years free of Union with Sweden. Hordaland is twinned with Cardiff.
In 2005 Cardiff celebrates 50 years as the capital of Wales, and 100 years as a city. So the two Councils are encouraging all sorts of Cultural Exchanges.
At the SWOC Committee meeting last November I suggested an O-exchange. This is a report on what I've discovered so far....
Gular and Fana (2 O-klubber around Bergen) are arranging a series of events in the last week of July and first of August (2005) in tandem with the Norwegian Championships for 15 & 16 year olds.
They would like to put up with us (!) for 10 days or so. I suggest we could take the Newcastle-Bergen ferry and visit them for 4 or so events?
In exchange they have expressed an interest in visiting Cardiff for a week after JK2005...ie: having competed on Cannock Chase at Easter.
We should be able to arrange an event for them (at Draethen??), and a Team/Score/Relay match at the Wennalt between the clubs; together with some partying in association with the Welsh-Norwegian Society and Cardiff County Council.
I am in touch with the International Contacts Official at the County Council, and have sent draft suggestions with a programme and accommodation to my friends in Bergen.
Easter 2005 is at the end of March. Anyone with potential input into the first week of April 2005 PLEASE contact me.
Just as important, please pencil into your diaries now, the last week of July and the first week of August 2005 for a Club Jaunt to Bergen.
Furthermore, if you are grabbed by the idea, please drop me a line expressing interest. Then I can tell the Norwegians how many we might be....and begin arrangements for travel possibly by plane (Rhoose-Schipol (Bergen)) and then hiring transport.
All depends on how many of us there will be!
Any questions, please contact me. Thanks,

Mike Down

Junior Training at SoudleyBike O at Pembrey
The Welsh Juniors were back in training after the Christmas break with coach Alic Bedwell. Chris Poole coach of the Southern Juniors had suggested a combined days training followed by the colour coded event at Mallard's Pike. Chris had put together some interesting exercises with combinations of long and short legs and two compass exercises which some of the adults found challenging!!! Despite the ideal crisp frosty conditions the village hall at Soudley provided a welcome warm base for lunch and sleeping hall for the Southerners. The final exercise was a relay where the controls were in groups with the team members having to decide which members went to which controls. It was an excellent format as in theory everyone went out simultaneously and no-one was left hanging around in the cold. In practise some of the teams took rather a long time discussing who was going where!! The NGOC event the following day was very well supported with over 130 competitors on the green course and 110 on the blue. Unfortunately computer problems led to large queues for registration which then transferred to the start. Otherwise apart from some solid areas of brashings it was a good day. Although we left Cardiff in bright sunshine the mists soon descended as we reached the coast. Conditions were not ideal for Kay Seward's first Bike O, spotting kites can be difficult from a bike at the best of times but when they are shrouded in thick mist!
The event was a 1 hours score and out of the forty or so entrants at least half were from the local cyclo -cross club. Pembrey provided an ideal area for bike O and Kay's course offered plenty of route choice. In the end only 2 competitors, Nick Dallimore and Dave Seward managed to punch all 27 controls and finish within the hour.
Welsh Champs Video
The Club now has a copy of the video taken at Pembrey at the 2003 event. It's worth a view. We are going to be given a newly produced BOF coaching CD called "An Introduction to Orienteering" hopefully available in June.
