EDITORIAL

As the nights draw in it may be time to reflect on our recent activities. The double colour coded weekend was very successful, attracting competitors from a wide area. It demanded a large input from organisers, planners and controllers but there were plenty of helpers to ease the load.
On a less positive note we have had to cancel the local event at Draethon because of the lack of an organiser. No-one enjoys having to organise events but perhaps we shouldn’t expect the same people to always do all of the work.
I somehow managed to download last years NGOC events and put them in this years calendar for which I apologise. I have been told that the NGOC calendar will be updated soon but it is always worth checking that an event is on before you travel!

AGM 19th October 2003

To be held at the WRE Badge Event, for further details see the website.
Could Club trophy winners please make sure that the trophies are returned to Gill before the meeting

Still Wanted

WOA rep to represent SWOC at WOA meetings, approximately every 2 months. If interested contact Frank Ince.

SI CARDS

At last weekend's events several people who own their own ecards were surprised that their SI ecard nos. were not on the BOF DB, especially as some of them assured me the ecard no. was also on their BOF membership card.
I contacted BOF about this, mentioning 2 families, the Ferrands & the Bryants, to whom this applied. It turned out BOF had their cards down as emit rather than SI. Nigel Ferrand confirmed with me his BOF membership card did have (Emit) after the number rather than (SI). BOF have corrected the Ferrands and Bryants, could others to whom this might apply contact BOF to get matter put right.

Notes
1 Detailed accounts available at the AGM, or by asking Nigel for a copy
2 Committee have agreed a mapping programme that will spend a significant proportion of funds over the next year or so. Other ideas welcomed.

Scottish 6 Day Event, Forres

Despite my apprehension about camping we had a great time at the 6 day event. Whilst Cardiff was suffering the only rain of the summer we were basking in Scottish sunshine.
The areas used were interesting and varied, two days included intricate sand dune areas which needed a 1:750 map and magnifiers for some. There were typical runable pine areas and a day with knee high heather fortunately the dry weather had shrunk most of the boggy bits. Each event needed maximum concentration and everyone seemed to make errors although some had fewer than others!
The downside for those on the official campsite was that it was approx 15 mins walk to the Event Centre and the showers but the Portaloos on the site and those at the events were immaculate.
Highlights of the week were dolphin and seal watching and the wonderful golden beaches.
There were approx 25 SWOC members there and notable results were:

LAGANLIA 2003

It was very exciting to have been selected to go to Laggonlia and fortunately I was able to travel with Rhodri but we had to get up at 4am! We met up with most of the others on tour at Manchester and travelled the rest of the way together.
Laggonlia is a small outdoor pursuits centre close to Aviemore. The boys stayed in a separate log cabin with a large grass area for football whilst the girls were in the main building next to the dining hall. There were 22 of us altogether with 15 adults to look after us.
We trained in the morning and afternoon on local areas at Inshriach, Strathmashie, Craig Brui ,Anagach and Achlean. These were typical Scottish forests with plenty of ticks and brashings. The biggest tick total for the week was 100! Fortunately it wasn’t mine. Although it was very tiring I learnt a lot and it was very interesting meeting GB Squad members . My highlight of the week was falling into a bog up to my armpits.

*I did’t believe anyone could destroy a pair of O shoes and a new compass in just one week, but at least he can use a washing machine now! Ed

Club Ranking List

Congratulations to Cerys for again leading the ranking list, to Rhodri for pushing hard into second place and to Judith who finished third and is the top senior again. Their performances over last 12 months have been consistently high and the discussion below should in no way be interpreted as casting any doubt on their rightful positions in the ranking list.
However, it has been suggested to me that the rules for compiling the ranking list, which count the 10 best performances, could favour a fast but possibly inconsistent orienteer over a more consistent one. For example, someone could have 10 good runs on technically easier areas, but perform much worse on technically complicated areas. To overcome this, it has been informally suggested that instead of taking the 10 best performances, the ranking list is based on the average points for all runs over year.
Personally I am not convinced that this would be a much fairer method. There are many valid reasons why an orienteer may produce an inferior performance such as recovering from injury or illness, or using an event to practice specific techniques such as compass work or contour interpretation. It could also be considered unfair to include local events where the longest course is a blue or green and hence the winner time will probably be by an M21 who would otherwise be running a brown course. It would also work against a keen newcomer to the sport who would probably start on easier courses where it is difficult to gain many points particularly as an M21, but who may score highly later in the year once they had gained some experience.
It would be interesting to apply this new method to the results for 2002/03, but I only retain the 10 best results on the spreadsheet, so I would have to go back to the original results to do it. Instead I propose to continue with the existing rules for 2003/04, but to also calculate and report the average points. If this produces much of a difference the ranking list rules can be reviewed more formally in a year’s time.
