BUTE PARK, BLACKWEIR AND PONTCANNA

ORIENTEERING RESULTS, 8TH APRIL 2001

Thanks for all supporting this little gathering. It was great to see so many faces, and very happy faces at that. Although Bute Park will never rate as a technical area, you all seemed to genuinely enjoy a brisk burn around very pleasant surroundings. It was just about big enough to provide a decent length Blue and Brown with the participation rates clearly justifying the decision to ‘upgrade’ the event due to the F&M limitations. With my hat of Orienteering Development Officer, it was particularly heartening to demonstrate how ‘noddy urban parks’ can still provide an effective, accessible resource for introducing people to the sport and at the same time, providing enjoyment for seasoned campaigners. (Not a single control of the 35 put out was vandalised/moved).

Thanks also for your patience and understanding in a somewhat hectic & informal start/finish/registration area. Unfortunately, the excellent turnout surpassed our expectations and stocks of most things including manpower, which until Havard, Barbara and Marion arrived, numbered one! Special thanks therefore to the aforementioned, also to Kate for dashing up to get extra photocopies and Pete for collecting controls.

Apologies for control 116/166 and control 175 (top of steep slope-I didn’t let on it was a particularly steep slope, arguably the top of the steepest slope ever used in the UK for a control site!).

One item of lost property- A ‘blue hills’ armless padded jacket, for age 14. Give me a ring if your offspring used it for a goalpost on 029 20 215047.

One of the many participants from the other side of the bridge commented to me that every time she runs around the green valleys of Wales, she can’t stop singing Tom Jones songs. Well, it’s not unusual……….Hope to see you all again soon, Clem.
